Boldface was founded in 2009 by the editors of Glass Mountain, the undergraduate literary magazine at the University of Houston. Our goal is to give emerging writers an experience that is usually available only to professional writers: several days of intense focus on the craft of writing through workshops, readings, and craft talks.
Participants attend workshops, readings, craft talks and optional evening social events such as open-mic readings. Visiting authors are on hand to talk about their work and meet with students who have signed up for individual work critiques.
Professional panels give you the opportunity to hear from established editors, UH creative writing faculty, librarians, small press staff, and local arts organizations to enhance the Boldface experience.
Workshops give valuable feedback on your work and the chance to hone your critiquing skills. When registering, participants choose the genre they wish to work on: fiction, nonfiction, or poetry. During the conference, each participant takes part in a small group workshop in that genre, led by a graduate student from the University of Houston’s Creative Writing Program.
Before the conference starts your workshop leader will contact you for the piece you want to workshop, and then send you work from other members of your workshop group. During the conference, workshops will meet for approximately 1.5 hours a day on Monday-Thursday – expect to give and receive lively and insightful feedback.
Networking opportunities abound at Boldface. We hope you’ll make many friends with other emerging writers and established professionals, and have fun doing it!
