to facilitate undegraduate participation we offer discount rates for universities and colleges. For undergraduate groups funded by their departments, colleges, provosts, or university QEPs, we are pleased to offer a “bring 5 students for the price of 4” deal this year. If you are not sure how to approach your university to take advantage of this offer we even have a detailed sample proposal you might use (available on request).
throughout the year there are several opportunities to gain scholarships and tuition waivers. We award several tuition waivers for:
- winners of UH’s Poetry & Prose Competition
- writing awards during our Write-a-thon fundraiser
- winners of the Lilly Robertson Prize – a competition specifically for Boldface attendees
- UH Creative Writing students are also eligible for merit-based Nelson Scholarships, selected by UH CW Faculty members.

“When I taught at the first Boldface Conference in 2009, I had no idea that it would bloom into the rare opportunity that it is today. Boldface offers attendees the ability to workshop their writing with faculty who authentically care about cultivating their students’ craft. But the daily workshops are only part of what makes Boldface stand out. Participants also enjoy craft talks, readings, field trips to explore Houston, and panels on issues that are relevant to the developing writer. Attendees even eat their meals (and sip endless cups of coffee) with faculty and visiting writers, gaining informal insight as well as friendship. The fact that no two days are alike makes Boldface seem like a prism that shifts the light; many attendees I met this May had attended for several years and were lit up by the idea of returning…I believe in Boldface and I know that it will only continue to evolve into one of the University of Houston’s best treasures.”
